Sam's Surgery...

When Sam's knee buckled and she fell to the floor in a game on Friday, January 23rd, we knew something was really wrong with her knee and she would have to see the doctor.  After an MRI, she was told there was a chip of bone floating around in her knee, which was causing the knee to lock up...this was by far the best report she could have gotten.  Doctor said he could do minor surgery to remove piece of chipped bone, she could rehab in two weeks, and then play the remainder of her senior year. We were thrilled with this report and anticipated surgery within a couple days.

Once again, things didn't play in Sam's favor.  She is from Miami and her insurance was only willing to cover the surgery in Miami. However, with much persistence from her athletic trainer at Millsaps and Mississippi Sports Medicine a loop hole was found and FINALLY on Thursday, February 12th she went in for surgery.

We had to be at the surgery center at 10:30 AM...she was all smiles at first...I should have taken another picture of her at 2:00 PM when she was still laying in this bed waiting to go into surgery.  She had gotten very restless, was starving, and I told her she was acting like Cooper (a child).  However, we made the best of it and laughed a lot the 4 hours was sat in this tiny room with curtain walls.

I was starving too, but I knew I couldn't eat in front of her.  So...as soon as they wheeled her to surgery, I found me some M&Ms for lunch.  As she told me...I couldn't leave her...I signed a waiver to stay with her.

Around 3:30 she had made it to recovery.  When the nurse came to get me, she said...I promise I didn't give her anything different than any other patient, but I have never seen anything like this.  She is laughing uncontrollably.  And yes, she was...she just laid in the bed and giggled and snorted.  It was one of the funniest things I had ever seen.

In her laughter, she asked me to take her picture and send to her teammates so they would know she was ok.  She also managed to read the clock at 3:55 and told me and the nurse she had to go...she had practice at 4:00.  She was right...practice was at 4:00, but she obviously was NOT going this particular day.

And she giggled herself back to sleep...

She was pretty drowsy on the way home, but once we got home and got her settled...oh...and some food, she was all smiles acting like her usual self.  And this little boy couldn't be happier that his best friend, Sam, was spending the night.

They are too much...

The next morning Cooper had 50s day at school and a sock hop for Valentine's. We tried to get him to roll his jeans and wear converse...nope...not happening...he's wearing his boots!

We were taking Sam back to school and then the rest of us were heading to Atlanta for cheer competition so these two hung out together until it was time to leave.  They had a lazy morning, and Anna Lauren loved every minute of attention she got from Sam.

We were sad we couldn't be home to take care of Sam all weekend, but she is tough and did just fine without us.  And...her mom came on Saturday for Senior Day so she had her mom here most of the time we were gone, which was a special treat for her.  Being from Miami, she gets very little time with her mom.

And now we are counting down the days to get to watch her play again...we expect her to play in the conference tournament, which is next weekend!
